History:
It was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Vadakkumkoor which was annexed to Travancore in 1754 by Marthanda Varma. The first Sandesha Kavyam in Malayalam called “Unnuneeli Sandesham” gives an idea of the history of the town. It is believed that the author was a member of one of the royal families of Travancore. The works describe in detail the great port of the city, although the sea is now several miles away and it has receded in the fourteenth century, probably after an earthquake or tsunami.
According to legend, Khara, asura of Ramayana, performed a strict penance for Lord Shiva. The impressed Lord appeared before Him and blessed Him with boon three Siva Lingas. Khara grabbed Lingas, one in each hand and the third in his mouth, and traveled across the sky to the south. On the way he was submerged by the weight of the lingas he was carrying and was therefore forced to go down and rest for a while. He placed the Linga in his right hand on the Earth while resting. When he resumed, he tried to eliminate the Linga, but all his efforts were in vain. He left the Linga in Vaikom and moved on. After traveling for a while, he installed the Linga in his left hand at Ettumanoor and the third at Kaduthuruthy, halfway between the two places. It is believed that one should have Darshan in these temples, which is very conducive.

The most prominent legend associated with Kumaranalloor Devi Temple is dated back to the time of the reign of Cheraman Perumal. The emperor began construction of two temples simultaneously- one at Udayanapuram and the other Thingalkkadu (which later came to be known as Kumaranalloor) where he wanted to get the idol of Lord Kumara installed. While the construction was at its peak, a disturbing incident took place in Madhurai Temple in Tamil Nadu. The gem studded precious nose ring of the Devi was stolen. The king immediately ordered an enquiry on the priest. The failure to find the ring resulted in a death penalty for the temple priest in 41 days. The priest was innocent and out of helplessness, he spent days and nights praying to the Devi.

History:
Kharasura on receiving the Shaiva Vidya Upadesh from Malyavan went to Chidambaram, and did severe penance and Tapasya for the attainment of Moksha. Pleased with his penance Lord Siva granted all the boons he asked, and presented him with three great Siva Lingas drawn out of Him. Assuring that He will ever be present in them, Lord Siva disappeared, asking Khara to worship the Lingas to attain Moksha. When Khara was returning south from Himalayas with the three Lingas, one in his right hand, one in left hand and other by the neck, he felt tired and rested awhile. After rest when he tried to pick up the lingas, they wouldn’t budge. He realized that it was Shiva’s maya and when called unto, the heavens spoke thus, “I shall remain here giving Moksha to whom so ever * take refuge in Me”. Khara having attained Moksha entrusted the holy Lingas to the custody of Maharshi Vyaghrapada who had followed him invisibly and asked the sage to protect and worship them.
